Composting Classes, Litter Cleanups, Earth Day Outreach ...

What will you do to help the City of Millbrae celebrate the 42nd annual Earth Day?

Each year, Earth Day — April 22 — marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.

This year's theme for Earth Day is Mobilize the Earth, where people of all nationalities and backgrounds are encouraged to voice their appreciation for the planet and demand its protection.

Earth Day is also an opportunity to make a difference in your own community to elevate the importance of environmental issues around the world.

Luckily for Millbrae residents there are plenty of options to do this all month long.

For starters, Millbrae residents can learn more about Earth Day and local programs by visiting displays in City Hall and the Millbrae Library through April 24. They can also pick up free guides and other handouts at these locations.

For those interested in participating with Earth Day outreach, greet City and Library staff and pick-up informative handouts on Wednesday, April 18, in front of the Library from 2:30 to 4 p.m., and Thursday, April 19, downtown on Broadway at Civic Center Lane from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Also on April 19, the San Mateo County Master Composter is offering a free workshop at the Millbrae Library from 7 to 9 p.m. on composting. Learn how to turn your fruit and vegetable scraps, leaves, plant cuttings and grass into compost that will enrich your garden soil. Call (650) 259-2339 to reserve a spot.

Kids are invited on April 20 to watch the Earth Day movie being shown at the Millbrae Library at 3:30 pm.

And on Saturday April 28 from 10 a.m. to noon, residents can attend the Earth Day Cleanup and Celebration for a citywide litter cleanup. Meet at Central Park on Palm Street.
