Man's Best Friend Teams Up to Fight Cancer

Dozens of hounds and their owners are expected to turn out for Millbrae's 2nd annual American Cancer Society Bark for Life event.

Calling all canines and their companions.

It’s time to sign up for the 2nd annual , a non-competitive walk event for dogs and their owners to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer, honoring the care giving qualities of canine companions such as guide dogs, service dogs, rescue dogs, therapy dogs, police dogs, cancer survivor dogs, and diagnostic dogs.

On Saturday, April 21, 2012, dozens of hounds and their owners are expected to turn out on Broadway Avenue for what is becoming one of Millbrae’s biggest annual events.

The American Cancer Society Bark for Life presents an opportunity for people to be empowered through their canine companion partnerships and to contribute to cancer cures through the mission of the American Cancer Society, according to Millbrae’s Bark for Life organizer Catherine Mao.

It’s also an opportunity to celebrate cancer survivorship, honor people lost to cancer, and fundraise in support of the American Cancer Society mission of eliminating cancer though research, education, advocacy and service.

Millbrae resident Jane Stahl and her dog Mosa are planning to participate. Stahl has already made a personal donation and is asking others to support her efforts by making a donation to her campaign.

“The American Cancer Society Bark for Life is more than just an event to me. It is my personal opportunity to help save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by supporting the American Cancer Society,” said Stahl on her personal Bark for Life donation webpage.

Joe Teresi Jr., has also made a personal donation and is ready to walk on April 21st with his dog Eddie.

Teresi writes on his personal donation webpage that “there are way too many people in our world who are affected by cancer. My canine companion and I are participating this year to honor all our family members and friends who have heard those words ‘you have cancer.’ The American Cancer Society Bark For Life is more than just an event to us. It is our personal opportunity to help save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by supporting the American Cancer Society.”

The Bark for Life opening ceremonies on April 21 will begin at 9 a.m. at the Kohl’s parking lot at 855 Broadway in Millbrae. The Bark for Life Relay walk begins at 9:15 a.m. and is one mile. Maximum of two dogs per person are allowed on the relay walk. All dogs must be on leash, and participants must be ready to clean up after their four-legged friends.

From 10 a.m. to noon the event continues with dog-friendly activities from dress up contests and doggie games to food, music and special dog guest demonstrations by therapy, police and rescue dogs. Registration is $15 for the first dog, $10 for each additional dog, per owner. For each registered dog, the owner will receive a raffle ticket.
