There are only eight days left until Millbrae's Spirit of Aloha fundraiser for the remaining $15,000 of a $250,000 campaign needed to renovate the historic Millbrae Scout House and transform it into a modern afterschool and Day Center for Millbrae's youth.

The building, which is nestled between Taylor Middle School and the Millbrae community tennis courts, has been undergoing volunteer improvements during the past two years.

Last year, Rebuilding Together Peninsula partnered with volunteers from the Millbrae Lions Club and Leos, Millbrae Rotary and Interactors, Peninsula Chinese Business Association, Boy Scouts Troop 355, Central Peninsula Church of Millbrae, Mid Peninsula Boys and Girls Club, Millbrae Chamber of Commerce and several local contractors to repaint the building interior and install new doors, windows, flooring, carpeting and equipment donated by local businesses.

Entrance ADA-compliant ramps have been installed and landscaping and picnic benches placed in front of the building.

The final phase of the campaign involves funding for a new roof, seismic bracing, heating system and pest control measures. The estimated cost for this remaining work is $52,000, of which approximately $22,000 has been raised. The Millbrae Lions Club has issued a $15,000 Challenge Grant, which sets a target of raising $15,000 in matching donations through the "Spirit of Aloha" event from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 11 at the Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum in the SFO International Terminal.

All Mid-Peninsula residents are invited to the party and will be entertained with Hawaiian songs and dances by Hula Manu O'o and participate in a silent and live auction. Some of the great auction prizes include: a kid-sized BMW M3, two nights at The Ridge Tahoe Resort, a two-night Carmel luxury estate getaway, Giants and 49er tickets, a Hornblower Dinner Cruise, a foursome and lunch at the Half Moon Bay Golf Course, lunch and a tour of the State Capitol with Assemblyman Jerry Hill,  some rare wines, lunch with Millbrae's Mayor and lots more.

Tickets are $45 payable to the Rotary Club of Millbrae, P.O. Box 23, Millbrae, CA 94030, and include a buffet by Amoura Cafe, a complimentary beverage ticket and free validated parking.

Reservations are requested by August 6 by calling 650-343-8332 or e-mailing: millbraeyouthcenter@mail.com.  Further information can be found on the Millbrae Youth Center Website: www.mcyc.net.

Event organizers anticipate the museum, which is a recreation of the 1936 International Terminal with expansive displays of model aircraft, airline uniforms and other objects that reflect the allure of flight since the days of the China Clipper, will attract over 150 Millbrae area residents.

The Millbrae Youth Center campaign is a community-wide volunteer project of the Millbrae Rotary and Lions Clubs, Millbrae Community Foundation, Peninsula Chinese Business Association and Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and individuals and does not involve expenditure of tax-payer or public funds.
