Start-ups in Millbrae

Millbrae is home to many small businesses but where are the start-ups?

Anticipating the upcoming elections, I see quite a few former business people making waves for how they will improve the community in and around Millbrae. Most seek to maintain Millbrae’s current image which represents a family friendly working professional suburb of San Francisco. Nothing is wrong with that, but Millbrae needs a shot in the arm with new and unique business offerings.

Millbrae has seen new business growth judging by the new construction off Broadway and El Camino. Despite the development of more eateries, banks, and other customer-facing services, the focus seems to be soley on a certain type of new business and making Millbrae a hot spot for tech start-ups doesn’t seem to be on the radar. It’s not that Millbrae hasn’t touched start-ups – there were a couple of very small biotechs that were based here but they moved out. Burlingame and San Bruno on the other hand continue to play host to several start-ups and of course San Francisco is currently booming with new technologies.

I'd like to see at least one candidate for office offer to take up the call for broadening Millbrae's business base and community brand. In the meantime, if you are an entrepreneur looking for a great location with easy access to BART, SFO, major highways and places to eat within walking distance, check out life in downtown Millbrae.

To the Millbrae council members – I strongly urge you to develop a plan to attract start-ups to our town similar to the efforts made in San Francisco and Burlingame. Make Millbrae a destination spot for new growth and talent in the tech and life science sectors and we will all reap the benefits in the form of jobs, revenue and business diversity.
