“The Bay Area has some of the most creative and innovative minds in America, and that is reflected in the fantastic products they make," Speier said. "Buying American-made products creates American jobs, and a better future for our children."

"Manufacturing jobs must be part of our economic recovery. They are well-paying jobs supporting middle-class families.”

In a statement about the exhibit, Speier's office explained tha the average total compensation for nonmanufacturing jobs is about $63,000 per year - but it is nearly $74,000 per year for manufacturing jobs.

Speier added, “To tackle unemployment and bring jobs back home from overseas, we need to train the next generation of American employees with the skills required by 21st-century manufacturing.”

The United States is the world’s largest manufacturing economy, producing 21 percent of all the globally manufactured products, compared to 15 percent produced by China and 12 percent produced by Japan.

American manufacturing accounts for 11.7 percent of the country's GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and is valued at $1.7 trillion. Twelve million Americans and more than 1.6 million Californians are employed in manufacturing.

Congresswoman Speier will kick off the "Make it in America" exhibit with a press conference with all 18 of the manufacturers this Saturday, June 9 at 11 a.m.

The "Make it in America" exhibit will run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday in the Expo Hall of the San Mateo County Fairgrounds, 1346 Saratoga Ave. in San Mateo. A map of the fair is also attached to this article in the photos section as a PDF document.
