Adult Summer Reading Picks

This summer, Patch is partnering with James Patterson, providing books lists for young readers of all ages. Patterson provided suggestions for toddlers through teenagers for our adult Patch readers to pass along to their children.

However, I didn’t want the older readers out there to feel left out. So, I decided I would chime in and make some recommendations based on some good books I’ve read recently. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy them, and please add any of your own summer reading suggestions in the comments section below.

Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity by Katherine Boo

Pulitzer Prize-winner Boo spent three years in a Mumbai slum following the lives of its inhabitants, living in the shadows of the city’s airport and most luxurious hotels. She tells the story of the families working towards a better future and the obstacles placed before them.

Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann

This book weaves together the disparate lives of a set of New Yorkers. The book highlights the differences—and similarities—between these individuals from vastly different walks of life.

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed

This memoir chronicles Strayed’s experience of losing her mother, watching her life fall apart and deciding somewhat impulsively to hike more than 1,000 miles alone on the Pacific Crest Trail.

The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman

This book follows the lives of international journalists working for an English-language paper in Rome. The story follows the changes the paper undergoes, as well as the personal and professional ups and downs of the employees.

The Devil in the White City: A Saga of Magic and Murder at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson

This well-written and well-researched book intertwines the story of building the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago and a serial killer who used the fair to his advantage.
