CSM Athletics: Three Olympic Prospects Win Throws In Special USA Track and Field Competition at CSM

Powell-Roos gets season-best discus throw in quest for fourth Olympic berth. Young upsets top-ranked men's discus thrower.

Suzy Powell-Roos continued her quest for a fourth U.S. Olympic Team berth with a season-best discus throw of 199 feet, 4 inches Saturday afternoon at College of San Mateo in a special USA Track & Field international Olympic Development competition. She beat Trecey Hoover (190-0) and China’s Yanbo Yang (188-4).

Powell-Roos lost her American Record to Olympic Gold Medalist Stephanie Brown Trafton earlier this month and is scheduled for her first meeting since the with new record holder on Sunday afternoon at USATF’s Pacific Championship meet at College of San Mateo. All of Saturday’s special event throwers are scheduled to return for Sunday’s competition, which also adds currently No. 2 American  Gia Lewis-Smallwood – in a field that includes six of the current top 10 Americans. 

Saturday’s men’s discus throw featured nearly all of the top U.S. Olympic team candidates. Jason Young, currently No. 2 on the U.S. list, threw 205-6 to upset top-ranked Russ Winger (200-6), with No. 3 Lance Brooks third at 194-2. Reigning U.S. champion Jared Rome finished fourth (190-4).

In a special hammer throw competition held at San Jose City College, current American leader Michael Mai threw 247-11 to beat Travis Nutter (227-3). Mai’s best this year is 249-3.

Aubrey Baxter won the women’s competition with a season best 232-7 to move up to No. 4 on the current U.S. list.

Notes:

Saturday’s throw by Powell-Roos moves her up from No. 6 at 198-11 to the number 5 spot on the current USA list, tied with Summer Pierson -- who is also scheduled to throw on Sunday. Brown Trafton tops the list with her American Record 222-3, followed by Lewis-Smallwood at 209-10.

Sunday schedule:

The official USATF Pacific championship meet runs all day on Sunday at CSM, starting with the 10,000 meters at 8:30 a.m. and the hammer throw at 9 a.m. It will include open and masters competition.

Sunday’s elite discus competition is scheduled for 3 p.m. with the men throwing first, followed by the women at approximately 4:30 p.m.
