The Best of Mills High Athletics in 2010-11

Sophomore track star Mendoza and girls basketball team lead list of Vikings' top performers.

With the 2010-11 athletic year recently in the books, here's a look back at some of the top accomplishments of Mills High School teams and athletes:

1. Girls Track and Field: Thrower Sabrina Mendoza enjoyed a dynamic season that may be the start of a fantastic prep career. After an impressive regular season that included a at the Central Coast Section Top 8 Classic, the Mills sophomore became the Peninsula Athletic League champion in the shot put and discus. After advancing to in both events, Mendoza took sixth in the shot put with a toss of 37 feet, 5 inches and eighth in discus at 109-0.

2. Girls Basketball: Mills took second in the top-tier PAL Bay Division with a 7-3 record, trailing only 10-0 Terra Nova. The Tigers proved a season-long foil, defeating the Vikings in both regular-season meetings, in and then again in the CCS Division III quarterfinals. Mills, which finished 19-9 and ended the year at No. 7 in Patch’s , returns its starting backcourt of Bryana Sui and Kristen LaStofka.

3. Boys Track and Field: Senior Marcus Chew won the high jump title at by clearing 5-11 ¼. The 5-foot-8 Chew also played football and basketball. Teammate Grant Murphy, a sophomore, also stood out in the postseason, finishing fifth in the 1600-meter run at in 4 minutes, 23.42 seconds.

4. Boys Basketball: The Vikings finished in a three-way tie with Carlmont and Jefferson for the mid-tier PAL Ocean Division title with a 7-3 record. The Vikings went on to in the CCS Division III playoffs before in the quarterfinals. Mills, which finished 17-10 and slotted No. 10 in Patch’s , will return 6-foot-6 center Brandon Berkovatz and point guard Matt Wong next season but lose eight seniors.

5. Girls Soccer: Despite starting off at 0-2-2, Mills rebounded to take second place in the PAL Ocean behind rival Capuchino. The Vikings finished 10-1-3 in league. Despite losing both of its goalkeepers and senior striker Jazmin Cazares, Mills will return midfielder extraordinaire Olivia Mullins, the anchor of its transition game and offensive prowess.

5. Cheerleading: The Mills cheerleading team got at halftime of the NFL Pro Bowl on Jan. 30. The Vikings qualified at UC Santa Cruz after competing with other high schools, being selected as some of the 1000 students participating in the event.

6. Boys Swimming: Mills senior Steven Smith stood out at at Burlingame on May 14. He finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.19.
