BOYS BASKETBALL: Vikes Can't Handle Burlingame
Panthers use stout defense to take control by halftime in CCS Division III quarterfinals; Mills enjoyed strong season but BHS proves too tough in playoffs.
The Score: Burlingame 63, Mills 36.
The Star: Mills High’s Marcus Chew scored a game-high 15 points in the Vikings’ loss in the Central Coast Section Division III quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at St. Ignatius. The senior guard scored eight points in the third quarter as he tried to will No. 6 seed Mills to come back from a 17-point halftime deficit against third-seeded Burlingame.
The Turning Point: Mills (17-10) took an early lead in the first quarter but Burlingame (25-3) turned up the pressure and ended the period on a 13-4 run, highlighted by Kwesi Bailey’s six points. That defensive pressure continued in the second quarter as the Panthers held Mills to 17 first-half points. Burlingame coach Jeff Dowd commended his team’s defense in the first half.
The Quote: “There is a core group of guys that are pretty good that are coming back and I think they’re going to want to accomplish more than this team did and I think they’ll work hard out there to do that.” – Mills coach Rick Hanson, on his team’s prospects for next season.
What’s Next? This is the end of the road for the Vikings. Mills saw its season end in the quarterfinals of the CCS Division III playoffs after finishing in the semifinals last season.
The Bottom Line: Mills lost all five starters following the 2010 season, but enjoyed a strong season nonetheless. The Vikings claimed a tri-championship in the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division and defeated Saratoga in their first CCS game. But Burlingame, No. 2 in and the winner of 16 straight games, proved far too tough for No. 10 Mills. Four Viking starters will graduate after this season, but 6-foot-7 Brandon Berkovatz will be back along with a solid core of players.
