Soccer Stars and Stripes

Millbrae AYSO soccer teams fill Taylor field with excitement every Saturday.

Hundreds of children in striped jerseys gathered in Saturday for soccer picture day.  These kids, ages 5 - 19 years old, are playing Millbrae AYSO soccer.  Picture day becomes a reunion, of sorts.  A time to see teammates from years past,  play on the playground, and make memories with your coaches by posing for a team photo.  It is also a time for parents to chat.

What did the parents chat about?  School mostly, and soccer.  There was excitement about new principals and teachers and back-to-school night experiences. Many complimented the results of Measure X funded construction completed over the summer to both Taylor and all four elementary schools.

Of course there were a few grumbles.  Taylor parents are concerned about the lack of time allowed  and restricted access to lockers between classes.  There was the "short-shorts scandal" as recent hot weather prompted a "crack-down" on shorts that didn't measure up.  It happens every year.  There is much valid concern that the tiny Taylor cafeteria is not adequate for the number of students.  Are you listening Superintendent Luna?  Parents want to know what you plan to do and when you plan to do it.  Meanwhile, Taylor students are rushed, cramped and, when it starts to rain, still eating outside under overhangs.  Not exactly a pretty picture.

Sorry, I promised myself to write about the good stuff. Back to our teams. Team names like the Goblins, The Stingers, The Pirates , and The Smurfs provided some great  banners.  The striped jerseys for Millbrae players this year make our teams stand out when the older kids play other cities like San Bruno and Pacifica. Millbrae AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) is led by an all-volunteer staff of coaches and referees who help kids enjoy learning and playing the game.  The energy and dedication of the players and coaches is really evident on the field,  not only during games but on weeknights during practices too.  It is an amazing organization that my kids have enjoyed being part of since they were in Kindergarten.

So, what does AYSO stand for?  "All Your Saturdays Occupied" (thanks Rob).  I will be occupied with soccer now through November,  but in a good way.  Being outside, with the community, watching our kids play together is one of the best ways I can imagine to spend my Saturdays. Thank you AYSO coaches, referees and families for another great season.  Thank you players for making it fun!
