Green Hills Girls Ran Lollipop 5K

Green Hills Girls running club ran in the Lollipop 5K in Golden Gate Park on Saturday.

Training for a 5K run means setting a goal,  making your body strong, and building endurance.  That is hard enough if you are an adult,  but the members of the Green Hills Road Runners club are only 9 -11 years old.

They have been training with parent/coach Lisa Whitsitt and teacher/coach Judy Louie, an experienced marathon runner.  Running as a group once or twice a week, they have been learning how to stretch,  about nutrition and hydration, and breathing techniques.  Everyone made it to the finish line this past Saturday in the Lollipop 5K run in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.

The day began early, with check-in and pinning of racing bibs. There was time to enjoy pre-race activities like bubble blowing, hula hoops,  face painting and colorful hairspray. The D.J. played up-beat tunes in the bandshell and welcomed special guest speakers.  About 1000 runners ,  girls and their adult running buddies, started the 5K run at 10am,  followed by parents and siblings in a 1 mile course.

When runners crossed the finish line they were given a ribbon and a lollipop.  After the run healthy snacks and beverages were provided along with a prize raffle.  The day was part festival, part inspirational and all fun.

Being part of something like this builds a special memory for each girl.  Not only do they feel they accomplished something for themselves,  but they were able to cheer on team members as they finished and celebrate together after the race.

In a time when the Millbrae School District does not provide P. E. teachers for elementary school students, it is good to know that there are parents and teachers out there who are willing to support children who have an interest in running for fun and staying healthy.  Isn't that something we should all support?
