Bounces, Bloopers and Home Runs

Playing Ball in Millbrae keeps kids fit and families together for the fun of it.

What's fast, exciting and bouncy?  It's Kick Ball, of course. This playground favorite turned after-school sport is enjoyed by coed teams of  4th and 5th graders from each Millbrae elementary school.

Bounces, Bloopers and Home Runs abound, making it  as fun for spectators as it is for the players. It's just like baseball, only the ball is bigger, redder, and rolled toward the plate to be kicked instead of smacked with a bat. Innings go by quickly and games last about 50 minutes. The convenience of the playground makes it easy to keep younger siblings occupied  - a real plus for mom and dad.

Coached by enthusiastic Rec Center staff (big thanks to Howard Kaplan for coordinating everything), the teams played their last regular games May 5th.  Next week's playoffs lead up to a Championship Game on Friday May 13th at 3:10pm at Green Hills School.

Friday night May 6th Green Hills fields  host the annual Mother/Son baseball game.  It's the Moms versus the Boys on both fields. What a great way to celebrate Mothers Day by striking Mom out! Of course,  the boys usually win, but the Moms play hard, run the bases and even catch the occasional fly ball without breaking a nail. It's all in good fun and is a fund raiser for school.

If you are in the mood for something a little more serious,  Baseball and Girls softball games are being played every evening and through the weekend at the newly green  Taylor Fields. These kids put in long hours of practice and play just like the Giants,  only shorter.

Cheering crowds of family and friends really add to the excitement. The kids come home dusty, tired and happy. Isn't that what Baseball is all about? With about two more weeks in the season, you still have time to catch a game. Bring a blanket (it gets windy), sunscreen, and some money for the snack bar. It's the best family entertainment value in town.
