Spring Valley Experiences Influenza Outbreak

Dozens of children absent because of flu.

Dozens of students have been absent this week from Spring Valley Elementary School because of an influenza outbreak. 

The San Mateo County Health System is urging children and staff showing any flu-like symptoms to stay home, however, anyone who is not ill can safely attend school, the health department said in a March 1 letter.

Here are some tips from SMCHS to stop the spread of germs:

  • Teach your children to wash their hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.
  • Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of their elbow. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.
  • Teach your children to stay at least three feet away from people who are sick.
  • If you or your child has not been vaccinated against the flu yet this season, please do so right away. See your medical provider and ask for a flu shot. It is not too late to get vaccinated this season.
