School District Vows to Fund Crossing Guard

City defunds crossing guard program.

The Millbrae School District Board of Trustees pledged to continue funding a crossing guard at the four elementary schools.

The crossing guards' salary of $36,000 was split equally between the City of Millbrae and the school district. But, in an effort to reduce the budget, the city decided to no longer pay its $18,000 share for the program.

“School starts next week, and we will have a crossing guard there on the first day,” said board President Don Revelo.

The city cut the funds for the crossing guard program because it was under the impression that the school district was doing the same, according to Superintendent Linda Luna.

But, although the district eliminating the position in March, it ended up receiving more money than expected from the state, and therefore was able to maintain the $18,000 in its budget.

“We didn’t communicate this to the city,” said Trustee Caroline Shea. “They cut it thinking we cut it. But, let’s fix it from here.”

The city does not plan to refund the $18,000, so the district must now consider other ways to raise the money, such as through a county or state grant.

“I don’t want to be responsible for a child being hit in front of a school,” said Trustee Frank Barbaro.

The district may also work with to direct traffic and students.
