School District Saves Thousands in Construction Costs

Costs well below original estimate.

The Millbrae School District will save about $690,000 in construction costs due to efficient building practices.

The ongoing work is part of the 2008 voter-approved $30 million Measure X Bond to update school infrastructure at all six campuses, such as roofs, bathrooms, heating and ventilation and to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Blach Construction, the firm awarded the contract, has completed the bulk of renovations, most recently a new public announcement system at Lomita Park.

The savings were a result of construction contingencies, which are funds budgeted for unforeseen circumstances identified after the project commences, such as dry rot, according to Kristen McLean, project manager for Blach Construction.

McLean expects the project to be completed this summer.

In addition to Measure X, voters also approved Measure N, a $30 million bond that will be used partly to renovate the Taylor Middle School cafeteria, which was built in the 1930’s to house about 350 students but currently accommodates about 850.
