School Board to Review Bond Measure, Rescind Layoffs

School district officials say Measure X leaves much work to be completed at Millbrae schools, including a new cafeteria for Taylor Middle School.

The Millbrae School District Board of Trustees on Monday will take a closer look at putting a $30 million bond on the November ballot.

The board will have a study session on the facilities bond lead by consultant Connell Lindh, who has said the so long as voters understand the need for new infrastructure.

“As families continue to move to Millbrae specifically for our schools, there are still many classrooms that need to be renovated and updated,” said Superintendent Linda Luna in a recent newsletter. “In addition, there are buildings where windows, light fixtures and the heating and electrical systems need to be replaced to improve energy efficiency.”

Luna added that Taylor Middle School’s cafeteria, which was built for 350 children and currently serves 850 students, needs to be replaced.

This summer using money from Measure X, a $30 bond approved in November 2008.

In a facilities report, the district presents numerous improvements that Measure X won’t cover, including reconfiguration of parking access and new playground equipment.

At Monday night’s meeting the district will go over the bond measure’s language and campaign rules.

The board will also consider rescinding layoffs for two instructional aides and a part-time counselor.  

To offset a deficit in this fiscal year’s budget the , shortening the school year and laying off teachers and staff.
