Millbrae Non-Profit Backbone Of Education

Organization keeps Millbrae School District programs running that would otherwise be cut.

A local non-profit enhances educational opportunities for children in the Millbrae School District. The Millbrae Education Foundation, founded in 2007, provides supplemental funding for Millbrae schools. The foundation surpassed its goal of raising $160,000 last year and set a new goal of raising $225,000 this year.

"The MEF paid the music teacher's salary for the district wide music program as well as instructional aides for four hours a day at each of the Millbrae elementary schools this year," said MEF President Deirdri Gladwin."There would not be a music program without the foundation."

Volunteers run MEF and most of the board members are parents with children in the Millbrae School District. Gladwin is a longtime member of the Millbrae community and both of her children attended Meadows Elementary School, Taylor Middle School and Mills High School.

"The Millbrae Education Foundation provided the resources necessary, particularly now that we have increased class sizes in the primary grades," said Linda Luna, school district superintendent. "The district is extremely grateful to the foundation for their partnership in funding additional resources and staff."

Most of the outreach is done by direct appeal, letters are sent home with all children in the district, and parents donate about 85 percent of total funds, according to Gladwin.

"We are currently working with the district to determine if there are other programs that need funding that we may be able to help with," she said.

The foundation will hold Donation Days in November, a two day event. A district-wide walk-a-thon is also held in May.

"We look forward to our continued partnership together on behalf of the district and the students in Millbrae,"said Luna.
