Lomita Park School Receives State Award

The award is for schools that serve kids living near or at the poverty level.

The State Superintendent selected for the 2010-2011 Academic Achievement Award.

About 8,000 California schools receive Title I funds, federal monies allocated to low-income schools, and approximately 10 percent received the award – including Sunshine Gardens Elementary in South San Francisco, the only other winner in San Mateo County.

“We are so proud of our students, parents, staff and principal for all their hard work and efforts in making Lomita Park an award winning school by increasing student performance and closing the achievement gaps,” said Millbrae Superintendent Linda Luna in a statement.

In order to qualify for the award, a school must show students' significant progress, including doubling the achievement target of socioeconomically disadvantaged students.

“These schools have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the education of their students and have achieved impressive results,” said State Superintendent Tom Torlakson in a statement. “I congratulate all those who put forth the extra effort that resulted in this prestigious award—school administrators and staffs, teachers, parents, and, of course, the students themselves.”

Lomita Park will be honored along with the other schools on May 20 at the DisneyLand Hotel.
