Vice Mayor of San Carlos Cited on Suspicion of DUI

Andy Klein was detained after taking sobriety, Breathalyzer tests.

San Carlos Vice Mayor Andy Klein was cited early Thursday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence, Klein said in a statement released to the press.

Klein said he pulled his car over Wednesday night after he received a phone call. While pulled over on the side of the road, a San Mateo County Sheriff's deputy pulled over believing Klein's car had broken down. Klein said the deputy became suspicious of him being intoxicated and called the California Highway Patrol who administered a field sobriety test and Breathalyzer. Klein said a blood sample was also taken.

Lt. Ray Lunny said the CHP officer arrested Klein and he was detained at the First Chance facility where first time offenders are held under suspicion of being intoxicated. He said he was released soon after.

“I am deeply saddened by the embarrassment that this may cause my family, friends, and the City of San Carlos,” Klein said in a statement.  “I understand as a political figure that we must hold ourselves to a higher standard and if I failed to live up to that standard I am truly sorry.”

Klein is set to serve as the city’s acting mayor in lieu of the sudden death of Mayor Omar Ahmad on Tuesday morning.
