Sting Catches Three Millbrae Businesses Selling Tobacco to Minors

Most Millbrae businesses complied with the law but some with national reach dropped the ball.

Deputies from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s office teamed up with officers from Daly City, San Bruno and South San Francisco to conduct tobacco compliance checks at 161 businesses in San Mateo County on Saturday, March 30, 2013.

Minors working with law enforcement personnel entered 16 Millbrae businesses and attempted to buy tobacco products. Three of those businesses sold the minor tobacco and were cited.

  • Walgreens – 45 South El Camino Real
  • Walgreens – 615 Broadway and
  • Skyline Chevron Station – 400 Skyline Boulevard

According to a release sent from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s office, at least 99 percent of the merchants where the minors tried to buy tobacco asked the decoy for identification. The vertical format of the CA identification card and the technology of current cash registers made recognizing a minor easier and prevented the majority of the sales.
