The California Franchise Tax Board's updated list of its top delinquent tax payers includes one taxpayer in Millbrae.
Chihyih & Tefung Chen owes $391,021, according to the list. The Chens have been on the list since at least January of this year, and the amount they owe has gone down almost $20,000 since then.
The FTB's website states that about 90% of taxpayers pay the taxes they owe. Those who don’t contribute to the state's tax gap, which is the difference between taxes owed to the state and taxes that have actually been paid.
The California tax gap is currently estimated to be about $10 billion.
Taxpayers on the Top 500 list will be removed once the tax is paid or the taxpayer agrees to make payments under an approved installment agreement or offer in compromise, according to the FTB.
Tax liabilities under appeal, in litigation, or in bankruptcy proceedings are not included on the list.
