Millbrae Residents Have New Commute Option

New ferry trips will give workers more choices for getting to work without fighting traffic.

In a release sent out Thursday, April 4, the Water Emergency Transportation  Authority announced it will add new trips to its South San Francisco Service that will give commuters more flexibility and tourists a different way to get to the heart of San Francisco’s waterfront entertainment area.

Beginning April 29 a new commuter trip will leave South San Francisco at 6:20 p.m. for Oakland’s Jack London Square.

On April 29, San Francisco Bay Ferry will offer enhancements to its South San Francisco service, including a new 6:20 p.m. commute option between South San Francisco and Oakland’s Jack London Square and Alameda Main, minor adjustments to its SSF evening schedule and a weekday leisure service between South San Francisco and the City. The new schedule is:

“The addition of a later commuter service was based on feedback from our riders who are looking for a later evening departure from South San Francisco,” said Nina Rannells, Executive Director of the Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA), which operates the San Francisco Bay Ferry fleet.

San Francisco Bay Ferry is a service of the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA). SF Bay Ferry also serves the San Francisco Ferry Building and Pier 39/Fisherman’s Wharf, Harbor Bay and Main Street in Alameda, and Oakland (Jack London Square), with seasonal service to AT&T Park and Angel Island.

“We expect this additional commuter trip will eventually increase our ridership to the levels we originally project,” said Rannells in the release.  Peninsula Congestion Relief Alliance and Genentech shuttles also will expand their evening commute services to accommodate the later trip.

The addition of the two-day-a-week leisure service will provide transportation to some of San Francisco’s most desirable waterfront destinations, including the Ferry Building, the new Exploratorium, Pier 39, Fisherman’s Wharf, and the historic streetcar line that runs along the Embarcadero.

This limited, pilot service will serve the influx of travelers and visitors during the peak tourism season, in addition to South San Francisco residents and school groups who want to take advantage of a mid-week outing to the City – without the hassle of parking and traffic.

San Francisco Bay Ferry passengers will continue enjoy a variety of on-board amenities, including free WiFi, food and full beverage concessions and seating options to maximize comfort. In addition, the ferries are designed to accommodate more than 30 bicycles.
