Library Sees Boost In Visitors

Annual report released.

The Millbrae Public Library saw a 19 percent spike in patronage compared to last year, according to Millbrae Library Manager Sandy Wee.

Lee presented the 2009-2010 annual library report to city council members on Sept. 14 showing not only a boost to 475,000 people coming through the doors, but also in circulation.

"This is due to San Bruno and Burlingame libraries cutting their hours," Wee said.

The city library is part of the San Mateo county library system, and wasn't affected by any cuts. In fact, it increased services. The library now boast an automated checkout system, additional computer classes and a Mandarin/English discussion group.

"We had a lot of dedicated volunteers," Wee said. "And we were fully staffed last year."

However, due to budget shortfalls, the library may need to cut services this year. There is no definitive plan on the types of reductions.
