Assemblyman will launch Seniors Against Investment Fraud program this morning.

Assemblyman Jerry Hill will be at the  in Belmont at 10 a.m. today to present Seniors Against Investment Fraud, a program designed to educate older residents on telemarketing and investment fraud crimes.

The program, operated under the California Department of Corporations, will begin locally with Hill’s introduction at the Belmont center. After a few words, Hill will be available for questions, said Belmont recreation coordinator Laura Guluzzy.

“So many seniors are victims of telemarketing, investment, and all different types of fraud crimes. So this is a way of educating seniors how to avoid being in that situation,” Guluzzy said.

Hill, 64, was elected to the state Assembly in 2008, and this will be the third occasion in which he has reached out to local seniors regarding.

“I’m not going to suggest that it’s age-related necessarily,” Guluzzy said. “I know people that are younger that have been victimized by telemarketing fraud crimes. But I’m just going to say that it’s (Hill’s) way of making seniors aware of it.”

According to census data, the population of elder citizens in Belmont is rising more quickly than in any other city in San Mateo County. However, seniors from neighboring cities like San Mateo are welcome to attend.

“The state of California has a very fast-growing population of those 65 and older,” Guluzzy said. “San Mateo County has the most in that group.”
