Hill Throws Local Event Tuesday to Celebrate Signing of Tobacco Law

To thank the local teens who inspired AB 1301 that levies steeper punishments on businesses that sell tobacco products to minors, Hill will throw a celebration with the local Boys and Girls Club.

Submitted by the office of Assemblyman Jerry Hill

Assemblyman Jerry Hill will join with local youth groups at the Boys and Girls Club of San Mateo to celebrate Governor Jerry Brown’s signing of legislation they proposed that requires the state to suspend and even revoke licenses of stores that are repeatedly convicted of selling tobacco products to minors.

Hill (D-San Mateo) introduced Assembly Bill 1301 after meeting with teenagers from the Youth Leadership Institute of San Mateo, who encouraged him to help them in their efforts to curb sales of tobacco to minors. The governor signed the legislation over the weekend.

According to data from the San Mateo County Tobacco Education Coalition, 25 percent of stores in San Mateo County sold tobacco to a minor decoy between 2005-2010.

The event will take place this Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 3:30 p.m. at the Mid-Peninsula Boys and Girls Club at 200 N. Quebec St. in San Mateo. For more information, call 650-347-9891.
