Sheriff's Deputy Pleads Not Guilty to Trumpet Theft

Deputy Brandon Hatt is accused of stealing the $2,000 instrument and a jacket.

Patch Blogger Jesse M. might be a trumpet player, but he wasn't too jazzed about being in court Monday morning.

He was there for the arraignment of Sheriff's Deputy Brandon Hatt, who is accused of stealing Jesse's trumpet on Dec. 20, 2012.

Hatt entered a not guilty plea on Jan. 28 and a preliminary hearing was set for April 23.

According to District Attorney's Office notes, Hatt was at the Aloft Hotel in Millbrae shooting pool on that night. He is accused of stealing the performing musician's trumpet and jacket. The trumpet is valued at $2,000.

Jesse found the instrument later that night after it had been thrown from a car window in a Millbrae neighborhood. The jacket never turned up again.

Hatt was arrested that night and was later released on $10,000 bail.

Jesse's blog says that "not too long ago, Hatt was awarded the medal of bravery by Sheriff Greg Munks for saving a young man from committing suicide. He was a member of the U.S. Army and had once appeared on MTV's reality show 'FEAR.'"
