Police Investigating Possible Link to Millbrae-Area Burglaries

San Bruno man arrested by Hillsborough Police has not yet been charged in any other burglaries.

Hillsborough Police are looking for possible burglary victims of a San Bruno man arrested over the weekend.

Federico Horny, 31, from San Bruno, was arrested for possession of stolen property and violation of the terms of his probation. He was booked into the San Mateo County Jail on Sunday, April 7.

Hillsborough Police arrested Horny after he knocked on the door of a home on the 600 block of Darrell Road early in the morning, then left. The resident quickly called the police, who arrested Horny as he was getting into his car. A search of his car revealed property that had been reported stolen.

"What's unusual is he comes to the doot at 7:30 in the morning and knocks on the door, then he walks away," said Hillsborough Police Captain Doug Davis.

Davis said Horny might be responsible for other local burglaries and that police are asking other possible burglary victims to identify evidence.

"This one was different from other burglaries. Most of the others are door kick-ins," Davis said. "There's certainly been an increase in burglaries in the area. What's disconcerting is, in the past, the suspects would ring the front bell and move to the rear then force the door. Now, they go straight to the back and kick in the door without checking to see if anyone's home. ... Our concern is a confrontation between the homeowner and the burglar."

Davis advises residents to be careful when opening the door for strangers and to use security systems. He also said a timely call to the police can help catch a suspect.

The Hillsborough Police Department is asking that any witnesses who may have seen Horny to please contact 650-375-7470.
