UPDATE: Caltrain Service Back on Track After Fatality

A man was struck on the tracks in Palo Alto early this morning.

UPDATE, 9:30 a.m. -

Beginning with northbound train 135 and southbound train 134, Caltrain service will return to its regular schedule.

Northbound train 135 left San Jose at 9:10 a.m. Southbound train 134 left San Francisco at 9:07 a.m.

About 5:35 a.m. this morning, northbound train 103 struck and killed a man on the tracks at the Charleston Avenue crossing in Palo Alto.

The preliminary investigation indicates that this was an intentional act.

The final determination regarding the cause of death will be made by the county coroner after the investigation is complete.

There were 55 passengers onboard the train, and no injuries to the passengers or train crew.

Train 103 was taken to East Meadow Drive, where the passengers were able to get off the train and board another train.

The train was subsequently moved to a siding in Redwood City.

At 8:40 a.m. the northbound track was reopened and trains began operating on both tracks at normal speed.

About 6:40 a.m. the southbound track was opened and trains began “single-tracking.”

All trains began operating at 10 miles per hour on the southbound tracks.  All passengers at the California Avenue and Palo Alto stations boarded from the southbound platform.

Caltrain personnel were at the stations to direct passengers.

This is the 11th fatality on the Caltrain right of way this year.

Of those, five have been determined to be caused by suicide.

In 2011, there were 16 fatalities.

I think I've been misunderstood. I am not at all insensitive to suicide. I wanted to point out that the first person who commented Jeannine, while entitled to her opinion, went too far. I apologize if it was understood differently than it was meant to be.

Claudia, I think those comments were directed to Jeanine, not you.
