A flat tire appears to have caused a two-car crash on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge early Thursday morning that killed a woman, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported at about 3:30 a.m. on westbound state Highway 92 east of Pier 1 on the bridge, CHP Officer Art Montiel said.
A preliminary investigation revealed the woman was in the rear passenger seat of a Honda Accord, which had sustained a flat tire and was traveling west on the bridge in the No. 3 lane at a low rate of speed and with its emergency lights activated, Montiel said.
A Range Rover, also traveling west in the No. 3 lane but at a higher rate of speed, approached and struck the rear of the Honda, according to Montiel.
The impact caused extensive damage to the Honda and killed the woman in the backseat. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities don't believe drugs/alcohol are a factor in the collision. If there are any witnesses to this collision, please contact Officer Aquino at (650)369-6261.
