As if there weren’t enough good reasons for people to visit our new Tom and Annette Lantos Center for Compassion at 1450 Rollins Road in Burlingame, we added two more.
One is more or less a seasonal deal, but since this is our first time through the spring in our new home, it’s our first “kitten season.”
People who know cats know they tend to have babies in the spring; and, inevitably, many litters end up unwanted and dropped off at animal shelters. Some local residents begin calling in early spring, asking “Have your kittens come in?” as if we were a retailer like Nordstrom waiting for a new line of swimwear to arrive! While it’s not quite like that, we do know that the majority of unwanted and homeless kittens we receive do arrive in the spring through late summer.
On Friday, 11 kittens were made available for adoption. I imagine most if not all will have their new forever homes in a matter of days. And, as they do, others will take their place in the adoption rooms.
For our second new addition, you’ll have to wait another week or so.
We built a 350 square foot walk-in clubhouse of sorts for kids and kids at heart on the second floor of our Center for Compassion.
It’s called our Humane House and has been my pet project these last few months, both overseeing the construction and all the detail work. In this cool space, visitors can look at x-rays of animals we’ve treated (the one attached photo shows a Cooper’s Hawk that received care in our Wildlife Care Center before being made well, then released), practice scanning a stuffed toy dog to find the microchip, test their noses in our Sniff Zone, scoop a kitty litter box to find hidden litter box tips, and dress-up as a veterinarian, humane officer or adoption counselor.
Just outside the house, people can learn about urban wildlife and how to humanely keep them from taking up residence in their home or yard.
