Tyler Snags Millbrae Yard Prize

Japanese-themed plot on Murchison Drive wins city's Water Wise Garden Award.

An evening stroll about five years ago inspired Judy Tyler to spruce up a front yard that by her own admission wasn’t quite up to snuff.

The semi-retired marriage and family therapist who has lived with her husband Marlowe at their Murchison Drive home for 12 years made good on her commitment to rehab the approximately 600-square-foot yard.

The city council announced Tyler as the winner of the 2012 Community Preservation Commission's Water Wise Garden Award at its May 22 meeting.

Tyler said she created from what “wasn’t much of anything” a lush and dynamic garden that’s light on the tap.

She said she built around shoreline juniper that replaced a lawn and a blue-needled pine tree with Japanese maples, exotic Indonesian blue rocks, a fountain, and a Half Dome-styled mini-boulder for some dramatic affect.

“I just love gardening,” Tyler said. “I love beauty and I love creating things.”
