Don't Strike Out! Own a Piece of Millbrae History

Matchbook from major leaguer who owned a liquor store in Millbrae.

Gus Suhr was a major league first baseman for the Pittsburg Pirates from 1930 to 1939, and also ran a liquor store in Millbrae welcoming anyone in “low spirits.”

An eBay member is selling a matchbook cover from Gus Suhr’s Liquor Store, which was located on El Camino Real and Victoria Avenue.

Suhr played for the San Francisco Seals before moving to Pittsburgh in 1930. From 1931 to 1937, he had the record for most games played - 822 - which ended because he attended his mother’s funeral in June of 1937, according to baseballlibrary.com

His wife, Marion, was the first female police officer in Millbrae, according to the Millbrae Historical Society. Guhr died on Jan. 15, 2004 in his home in Scottsdale, Ariz.
