The honor was given to Colapietro at the city council meeting for her strong commitment to the community and dedication to volunteerism, according to Yee.

"Marge is simply one of those people that gives their heart to the community," said the Senator. "When you have someone that cares about individuals, I think that's the most noble thing you can do, to just simply care about others."

Colapietro moved to Millbrae in 1972, and has served on numerous committees, including the Friends of the Millbrae Library, MCTV, the Crime Stoppers Board of Directors and the Committee to Save Millbrae Fire Services.

“My favorite thing about volunteering is that I hope that when my task is complete, that the community is better for what I have done,” she said.

She is especially proud of her work in ensuring passage of two fire assessments in 2004 and 2009.

“That was something that impacted the health and safety of our community,” she said.

“She is the epitome of what a public servant should be,” said Yee.

Yee has been giving out the award - typically during Women’s History Month - to two women every year since 2003.

Beverly Upton was honored separately as Yee's other “2012 Woman of the Year” inductee. She was chosen because of her resolve to end family violence and her help in passing tough domestic violence laws in California.
