Update: Water Main Break Fixed

Hundreds of residents were without water for most of the afternoon in the Mills Estates area on Thursday.

Update Jan. 27 10:20 a.m.

Crews fixed the break in the water transmission line that ruptured yesterday on Helen Drive and Geraldine Drive at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, according to Public Works Director Ron Popp.

However, as crews were finishing the repair work, another leak was detected in the same transmission line, which was installed in the 1940's and 1950's. The new break was upstream from the cutoff valve, and crews did not finish repairs until 9 p.m.

A city water pipe ruptured on the corner of Helen Drive and Geraldine Drive at about 12:35 p.m., causing temporary water loss to hundreds of residents and flooding the streets with debris.

The line delivers water to about one-third of the city, and work crews are currently fixing the break. They are waiting for a part to fix the 5-foot crack in the pipe, and expect to complete work and restore water by 4 p.m., according to Jim Harrington, Public Works water foreman.

“This is the fifth time in the last five years that we’ve had to shut this pipe down,” Harrington said. The pipe also leaked yesterday, and it was repaired with a 2-foot metal patch.

The temporary water interruption affects houses from Helen Drive and south toward Mills Estates.
