Update: Suspicious Package at SFO Deemed Harmless

Many flights delayed

A suspicious device spotted in a bag at a San Francisco International Airport security checkpoint has been declared harmless, and the checkpoint has reopened, according to airport officials.

The device was spotted by a Transportation Security Agency screener at 11:17 a.m. at a security checkpoint in Terminal 1 at Boarding Area C, airport spokesman Mike McCarron said.

Police and TSA officials called in the San Francisco Police Department's bomb squad to investigate the device, shutting down the checkpoint and surrounding areas during the investigation.

The device was found to be harmless shortly before 1:30 p.m. and the checkpoint was reopened, McCarron said. A bus bridge was established during the closure to transfer arriving passengers around the closed checkpoint.

Around eight to 10 Delta Airlines flights will be delayed because of the incident, affecting approximately 1,200 departing passengers. The airline hopes to be back on schedule by 6 p.m., McCarron said.
