Monday Ends Fire Season for Two-County Unit

San Mateo-Santa Cruz Cal Fire will continue to staff engines through rainy season.

Monday marks the end of the Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz unit's 2011 fire season, which means the unit will be reducing its seasonal staff.

The unit responded to 724 wildland and other fires within the two counties during the 2011 season. All of the fires were kept to less than 10 acres, Cal Fire officials said.

Cal Fire will continue to staff engines in both counties during the upcoming rainy season. Unit Chief John Ferreira advised all resident to maintain at least 100 feet of defensible space around their homes as winds can quickly dry fuels and increase fire danger even in winter months.
