Mexican Quake a Reminder For Us

Earthquakes are a way of life for those living on or near a fault. Preparedness is key.

A magnitude-7.4 earthquake rattled the area near Oaxaca and Acapulco, Mexico Tuesday morning, reminding those of on the Peninsula of the potential damage from a temblor.

An aftershock was measured at magnitude-5.1 within hours of the bigger quake.

According to the United States Geological Survey, there were 22,289 earthquakes worldwide in 2011, of which about only 20 measured above a magnitude-7.0.

In 2011, there were 5,237 reported earthquakes in the United States. Only one was above a magnitude-7.0. This year, we are up to 694.

In California, things have been quiet over the last week, with only a few small shakers.

The strongest, a magnitude-2.8 centered in Tres Pinos, Calif. and the weakest, four magnitude-1.0 miniquakes centered in Berkeley, Orinda, Chualar and Tres Pinos, Calif.
