The is providing free tax preparation to San Mateo County residents who earned less than $50,000 in 2011.

Some low-income families may qualify for an Earned Income Tax Credit, for a possible refund of $5,700. The free service was made possible by a $4,000 United Way of the Bay Area grant to the Samaritan House.

“Our free tax sites open the door to programs that empower people to improve their finances,” said Kelly Baston, spokeswoman for United Way, in a statment. “In addition to saving families hundreds of dollars on tax preparation, our sites connect low-income families with programs that can help them start saving, go back to school, get a good job, buy a first home or start a new business.”
