Millbrae Officials, Corporate Reps Break Ground on New Safeway Store

When the new Safeway actually opens, however, is not entirely clear.

Millbrae officials and corporate Safeway representatives sporting khakis and hard hats gathered in front of what is now the old 525 El Camino Real store this morning to usher in a new era.

"Welcome to the future of the brand new Millbrae Safeway store," Millbrae Mayor Marge Colapietro said standing at a podium next to two giant Caterpillar excavators whose jaws were aimed squarely at the iconic Safeway logo that sits atop the store's arch at the groundbreaking ceremony,

When that brand new store actually opens, however, is not entirely clear.

Safeway officials say they expect to open their doors sometime next May, but Colapietro indicated at Tuesday's city council meeting that the store could open its doors as much as than the corporate offices are saying. She cited weather and contractor efficiency as key factors in how long it takes for the renovations to be completed.

However long it takes, the new store will bring new jobs and amenities that will enhance the experience of Millbrae Safeway shoppers, Colapietro said.

Safeway is promising Millbrae customers expanded prepared foods, deli, bakery and pharmacy and florist departments, plus a wider selection of organic foods. It will also feature outdoor seating.

Colapietro said the new Safeway will be a store "that our community will be proud of and will embrace."

The company says the 54,000 square-foot "lifestyle" store will be built to Leadership in Environmental Efficiency and Design (LEED) equivalent standards and will be California Green Building compliant.

The store will expand its workforce from 100 to 150 and will nearly double customer parking, Safeway officials say.

"We're happy to be part of the evolution of downtown Millbrae," Safeway Vice President of Real Estate Steve Berndt said.
