Mayor: Safeway Could Reopen Three Months Early

Colapietro says renovations could be completed sooner than expected.

Millbrae Mayor Marge Colapietro said the Millbrae Safeway store that closed for renovations last week could reopen well ahead of schedule.

Colapietro cited sources who told her the grocer could open its 525 El Camino Real store as soon as three months faster than originally projected. The company has said it expects the store to reopen in about a year.

Colapietro said the weather and the contractors’ efficiency will be the determining factors in how soon the renovations are completed.

She made the comments at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

A Safeway spokeswoman did not respond to an inquiry from Patch on Tuesday requesting an update on the work, among other questions about the renovations.

Safeway will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Friday morning at 10 a.m.
