Reminder: Earth Day Celebrated Saturday in Millbrae

The city pushed forward its Earth Day celebration to give more locals a chance to participate.

Though worldwide Earth Day was celebrated last weekend, Millbrae residents will have a chance to do their part this Saturday when the city hosts its Earth Day Citywide Cleanup.

Millbrae made a deliberate choice not to hold its event last Sunday.

"Actually, Earth Day activities are celebrated the whole month of April," says Millbrae Environmental Programs Manager Shelly Reider. "We're doing (the cleanup) on the 28th to not compete with all the other Earth Day activities taking place. We're just doing it then so we get more participation."

For Reider, Earth Day isn't just one day. "We like to celebrate Earth Day every day here in Millbrae," says Reider.

The city has been busy with other events during April. A children's environmental movie was shown last Friday. Staffers have twice staffed tables at downtown streetside locations to distribute eco-friendly materials to local residents.

And some 1400 students in local schools received handouts from the city.

"We sent newsletters to get them in gear for helping with the environment," says Reider, "and we've done a couple presentations as well."

But this Saturday is the biggest event for the city. The Earth Day Citywide Cleanup will run from 10 a.m. to noon.

You're asked to meet at Central Park (on Palm between Taylor and Richmond Streets) to help pick up litter around the city.
