Cirque du Soleil, Wild Women and Russians Highlight the Weekend Calendar

Last minute tax work may take up your time this weekend. But if you're ahead of the game, there are some fun things going on in the Bay Area that we wanted to bring to your attention.

TOTEM by Cirque du Soleil

Sunday @ 1:00 p.m. in San Jose

This magical show "traces the fascinating journey of the human species from its original amphibian state to its ultimate desire to fly. The characters evolve on a stage evoking a giant turtle, the symbol of origin for many ancient civilizations.

Inspired by many founding myths, TOTEM illustrates, through a visual and acrobatic language, the evolutionary progress of species."

KCSM Jazz 91 Presents: Pamela Rose's Wild Women of Song

Saturday @ 7:30 p.m. in San Mateo

Jazz singer Pamela Rose uses strong visuals, intelligent storytelling and her swinging jazz band to make a convincing case for the enduring contributions of women songwriters to the Golden Age of popular song.

The Russians Are Coming!

Sunday @ 12:00 p.m. in San Bruno

How did fear of the Russians shape Sweeney Ridge? You can find out as you hike with Nike missile veteran David Bridgman, who will point out how Russia indirectly changed the course of these parklands. The moderately strenuous hike starts at the far west end of Sneath Lane in San Bruno.

Considered one of the San Francisco Chronicle's Top 10 Hikes.

Saturday @ 1 p.m. in Pacifica

The community is invited to participate and “cast a few lines” by writing their own poems or lines of prose at the guidance of the pier’s stenciled directions to fishermen: two lines per person. At designated intervals, participants will be asked to walk the pier and write two lines of poetry at each stop.

Saturday @ 5:30 p.m. in Burlingame

This year’s event has a “Mad Men” theme, and guests are encouraged to wear cocktail attire of the “Mad Men” era. All Star Juke Box, featuring eight dynamic musicians, will set the stage for an evening of dancing and lively entertainment.

The annual event raises funds to support the six elementary schools in the .

Elvis Costello and the Imposters

Sunday @ 8:00 p.m. in San Francisco

Long-time singer, songwriter Elvis Costello & the Imposters perform as part of their "unpredictable and uninhibited" Spectacular Spinning Songbook 2012 tour at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco.

Cirque was awesome! Five Stars!!! Take a friend, your kids, or a date or just wander in to enjoy by yourself. It was better than Ovo. Totem is amazing!
