Gardening Tips: Saving Rainwater Lecture

San Mateo County Offices Branch Libraries, 1 Library Ave, Millbrae, CA | Get Directions »
FREE

Learn how to minimize your landscape and garden watering by tapping into “new” water sources, such as graywater and rainwater harvesting. Learn the components necessary to install a simple laundry-to-landscape graywater irrigation project and the requirements for a rainwater harvesting system. Sample calculations and conversions will help you determine how much water you can collect and use for your garden. Using stored rainwater and graywater conserves water and energy, and may help to lower your water bills. Capturing rainwater also reduces water run-off of pollutants from entering our waterways.

Instructor: Sherri Osaka is a licensed landscape architect and owner of Sustainable Landscape Designs, a Bay Friendly Qualified designer, a director of the local California Native Plant Society, co-founder of the Sustainable Landscape Round Table group, and life-long organic gardener.

People must R.S.V.P. by calling (650) 259-2339.

The Millbrae Library is part of the San Mateo County library system. The 27,000-square-foot building was remodeled in November 2004 after voters approved a $10.6 million bond in 2001. The building receives lots of natural light and has comfortable reading areas.

There are 62 computers, and reservations are recommended during peak hours, M-F 3-6 p.m. and weekends.

The library also houses two study rooms that fit up to 8 people, and can be booked one hour at a time on a first come first serve basis.

There is also a Homework Center (M,T,TH 3-6 p.m. and W 2-6 p.m), where staff and volunteers assists students with most academic subjects. The center has four computers and a printer.
